Rick's Travel Adventures

Episode 3

WOW!!! Time does fly! It's already Tuesday again and I haven't updated the story of my wanderings since last Tuesday.
Last Wednesday through Saturday are all a blur now. Most of those days were spent either rearranging items on the motor home and trailer, trying to conquer email problems (which I still haven't), or trying to find a windsurfing location that I could access with the motor home. The weather was pretty cool and threatening to rain, so I wasn't really missing much. I finally found a good location, although it wasn't the glassy smooth water that South Padre is known for.
Each evening, before the mosquitos came out, several of the "campers" at the park had a cocktail hour that I missed each day, but I was invited over for a campfire get-together after dark and after the mosquitos went settled down. On Saturday evening the park had an entertainer that performed lots of Johnny Cash and Buddy Holly songs. It was actually a threesome and they were very good. He's been performing for 59 years, and boy! could he play the guitar.
Sunday, clear skies and fair breezes were predicted and I finally got to sail (windsurf.) My first time in about a year and a half. I was surprised that I made most of my jibes. There were lots of porpoises in the channel where I was sailing and it was nice to see them.
Monday, I left South Padre Island and headed north to Corpus Christi. I found a place to park, walked over to the marina to look at sailboats and struck up a conversation with one of the boat owners. He happened to be a member of the yacht club here and I think he's going to put me in contact with some people that I might get to do some crewing for. I also contacted a sailboat broker and made arrangements to have him show me some boats on Tuesday.

Tuesday 10 February 2015 - Woke up, had breakfast and headed over to the marina to look at several boats that are for sale; a 40' Endeavor, a 37' Hunter, and 43' Mason Cutter. Of the three, the Hunter was the nicest. The Endeavor needed a lot of work on it, as did the Mason Cutter. Next, I drove over to another marina about 25 miles away and looked at two more, an S2 that was 36' long, but seemed very cramped and dark; and a Morgan that had as unsupported (no stays) mast. I'm sure it was seaworthy, but, overall, it just didn't appeal to me. Tomorrow, I'm meeting a fellow to look at another boat that he says he spared no expense in rigging for cruising. I think it may have been damaged in a hurricane. I'll see if he mentions that. We'll see.
Corpus Christi looks like there's lots of other things to do, perhaps some windsurfing if the wind will blow, and I'd like to tour the U.S.S. Lexington, an aircraft carrier anchored on the other side of the harbor.

            Until next time,
May the wind always be at your back.
