Episode 169 - Marathon Car Show at Overseas Pub

Sunday, 8 July 2018 - There was a nice little car show at the Overseas Pub & Restaurant this afternoon. There must have been about 40 cars or so. It never ceases to amaze me how people can have and drive a car for 10 - 20 - 30 years or more and still have it look like it hasn't left the showroom yet. About a third the cars in the show were less than 10 years old, and almost all of them were muscle cars with horsepower ratings in the 400 to 750 HP range. I noticed one of the Mustangs had a new sticker price of $41,000 and a power upgrade of $73,000...More. There was even a 600 hp Cadillac. The engine compartment on the Caddy was totally enclosed with fairings by the factory, so you couldn't see the engine at all, so I asked the owner how in the heck he does do repairs on it. He said, "Well, you open the door and reach up and push the 'OnStar' button and say 'Come fix my car.'" Easy! There were several Camaros and GTOs of varying ages, but I was surprised that there weren't any older Mustangs. I think the oldest car was a 1950 Chevrolet, unless you count an old chopped hotrod. I don't know what the body on it was. It was nice to get out and see the cars, discuss them with the owners, have a beer, and see some friends, too.

Monday, 9 July - I renewed my insurance on the boat today and attempted to renew my subscription to my charts through Navionics, but waited for 30 minutes on hold on the phone and gave up. Maybe tomorrow.

Tuesday, 10 July - I tried again to renew my Navionics charts today, but still failed. I sat on hold on the phone for over a half hour while waiting for the download on the computer, which after about 4 hours of watching the computer's download meter going up, down, up, down and up again between 5 hours and 30 hours indicating time till completion, I finally gave that up too. If your phone company tells you that your service plan will have "UNLIMITED" data downloading ability, don't even think about believing them. If you try to download anything to your computer through your phone, they put a retarder on it and it is extremely slow in comparison to straight to the phone or even through WiFi. That's not "UNLIMITED."

Wednesday. 11 July - A gas tank disappeared off my afterdeck and $25 went into my pocket for it this morning. I still need to get rid of a sail, at least three fenders, a foot pump and a 5 to 16 foot fishing outrigger like you see on big sport fishing boats. These are all items that I've gotten out of the mangroves and for which I can't find the rightful owners.

Thursday, 12 July - Another attempt to update several computer and iPhone programs today, this time successfully. I updated several apps on my iPhone and its operating system, several applications on my laptop, and the Navionics charts for my chart plotter and iPhone using the marina's WiFi.

Friday the 13th of July - I cleaned rust and corrosion off some of my fishing gear and consolidated two fishing tackle boxes into one, then later made a run to the marina for 45 gallons of fresh water and siphoned it into my tank onboard Island Time. With westerly winds, which we rarely get here, one of the boats near me gets too close, so with light favorable winds today, I raised the anchor and moved further away from it. Now, I hope I'm not too close to one of the others.

Saturday, 14 July - I had been looking forward to seeing Fiddle Rock playing at the Hurricane Bar this weekend, but heard on the Cruiser's net this morning that they would be playing this evening at a different bar, Havana Jack's, too far to walk. I got on the radio to see if anyone was going that had a car and Odie and I both caught a ride with Wayne from Blue Max in his car. Havana Jack's, which I hadn't been to before is open-air and right on the beach, which I really liked, but there was some bad news. Steve and Randy's duo, Fiddle Rock, will be broken up again. Steve's headed to greener pastures in the Seattle area for the summer, and they won't even be playing this weekend. I'm sorry to hear that. They are the only local performers I'll go out of my way to listen to.

                Until next time.

"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!" - Hunter S. Thompson
